Lucas Glover Retakes U.S. Open Lead as Mickelson Makes BogeyBy Erik Matuszewski
June 22 (Bloomberg) — Lucas Glover regained the lead in the final round of the U.S. Open golf championship after Phil Mickelson missed a four-foot par putt on the 15th hole.
Glover is 4-under par with five holes remaining at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmingdale, New York. Mickelson tied for the lead with an eagle at the par-5 13th hole before slipping to 3-under with the three-putt bogey on No. 15.
Ross Fisher also is 3-under par, while Hunter Mahan and Ricky Barnes are 2-under. David Duval is 1-under.
Defending champion Tiger Woods finished even par for the championship after a 1-under 69 during the final round.
“It was as good as I hit it all week, and to miss that many putts is pretty frustrating,” Woods told reporters after his round. “Overall, I gave myself so many chances and I just made nothing.”
Also even par are Mike Weir and Soren Hansen.
The U.S. Open was interrupted by rain three of the previous four days, extending the season’s second major tournament to a non-playoff Monday finish for the first time since 1983.
Mickelson, No. 2 to Woods in the official World Golf Ranking, is seeking his first U.S. Open victory after runner-up finishes in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2006. He has 36 career PGA Tour wins, while Glover’s lone victory came in 2005.
